SPLITTING AN "ETHERNET" NETWORK CABLE INTO TWO
Since the current common 100Base-TX (and 10Base-T) network cabling uses four pairs of cable, of which only two pairs are in use, the other two pairs are lying "idle". Two such splitters are needed, one placed near the computers and the other near the switch or similar. In this way, one fixed network cable can be shared between two computers.
THIS DOES NOT ALLOW ONE CONNECTION TO BE SPLIT INTO TWO.
Note! You need a splitter at both ends of the cable to be split (= two pieces). The splitter does not contain any electronics, i.e. it does not act as an ethernet switch or hub. Splitters only allow you to move two existing lines over a single cable.
